The First Battle of Morn Torin glanced about quickly to make sure no one was watching. Then he climbed down the rocky hill and ran along the chalk road to the Transport Compound. He was late. The afternoon wind had already whipped the sand into biting red clouds. His gold medallion clanked against his chest as he ran. Sand spattered against his neck and stung his face. He lowered his head and wrapped his cloak close around him. Torin was still in the Unclaimed Zone. He knew the danger of being caught there. For a moment, the boy could see the tall granite wall of the Compound. Then the sand clouds swirled again, and the wall dissolved into grainy shadow. Children of Time …….Mary looked tenderly at David. “Darling, you know that most people can’t have children. Remember your history? When they tried to rebuild the ozone layer, the synthetics they used entered the ecosystem, and now only five percent of the world population can produce normal children. The Guardians have forbidden anyone with damaged genes to reproduce, and rightly so. The human race would irreversibly mutate within one or two generations. “Besides,” added Jack, “If everyone who carries normal genes leaves, sooner or later the Earth will become an empty planet. Your mother and I feel it is our duty to stay here and weather the storm.” |
